Newhaven Growing Together Community Garden finally achieves charity status!
After months of hard work the Growing Together Community Garden (GTCG) team are pleased to announce their beautiful garden by the sea is an official charity.
Now the garden, run for and by the community, is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) it will be easier to run more projects, get more people involved and grow more together.
Trustee Kate Bowen said: “Now our next challenge – we are optimistic that our new found status this will open new doors as we look for some longer term funding for the group. ”
The GTCG is has been hosting gardening projects for the Newhaven community for the last three years, including Gardening for for the over 50s and Cook, Grow, Share.
It has also held a range of events for the community including a triumphant Jubilee Party and a spectacular Illuminated Garden Party.
As a CIO the garden would like to employ a part time gardener to help take care of the gardens stunning array of flowers and vegetables and help run more courses, activities and events.
A CIO is a new kind of charity that allows an organisation to enjoy the benefits of being a charity without having to register as a company with Companies House.
Ms Bowen said after contacting the Charity Commission the process was quite easy, but added: “One challenge was choosing which of the suggested model constitutions fitted with our group. Luckily we tracked down a word version of the model constitution that we could amend and adapt.”
